Before the rabbits, Potter was a mycologist — and a good one, painting fungi and mosses with a precision that the scientific establishment of the day declined to take seriously because she was a woman without a university post. The back panel is nothing but her studies: bracket fungi, beech mast, conifer sprigs, watercolour on tinted paper.
Jacket intact and reasonably bright but rubbed, with light scuffing across the back panel, a soft crease at the top edge near the spine, and edge wear.
