Frank Zöllner is one of the leading Leonardo scholars, and this Taschen volume walks through every surviving painting, with large, close-cropped details that let you inspect a curl of hair or a crackle in the varnish. The notebook drawings are woven through too. Siege engines, geometric studies and scribbled mirror-script show the engineer behind the painter. The endpapers reproduce a full notebook sheet, coffee-colored stains included, which is a nice touch.
Condition is honest "good." The interior pages are clean and bright. The back board has two water rings where the glossy laminate has lifted in small patches, there's a faint tide line and a crease at the foot of the spine, and the front endpaper has a small nick at its edge. It's a fine copy for reading and priced for its scars.
